Bitter Lands

Set in 1970s Turkey, the story begins in Istanbul with Yılmaz, a hardworking mechanic, and Züleyha, a beautiful, innocent tailor, who are deeply in love and planning their marriage. Their dreams are shattered when Züleyha’s stepbrother gambles her away to pay off his debts. While protecting Züleyha from a brutal assault, Yılmaz accidentally kills the criminal. Forced to flee the law, the young couple takes a train south and finds refuge in Çukurova (Adana), a vast, fertile land ruled by powerful, wealthy landowners. They find work on the prosperous ranch of the Yaman family, choosing to hide their identity by pretending to be brother and sister. However, this desperate lie triggers an unstoppable tragedy. Demir Yaman, the sophisticated yet ruthless sole heir to the family fortune, falls obsessively in love with Züleyha at first sight. When Demir's powerful mother, Hünkar, learns that Yılmaz is a fugitive facing execution, she blackmails Züleyha into marrying Demir, promising to save Yılmaz's life in exchange for a rightful heir to the Yaman dynasty. Believing she is sacrificing her freedom to keep Yılmaz alive, Züleyha enters a loveless marriage. When Yılmaz is eventually released from prison, he returns to Çukurova as a wealthy, influential man driven by vengeance and a broken heart. The region becomes a battleground of passion, jealousy, and family vendettas, testing whether true love can survive when buried beneath decades of corporate manipulation, power struggles, and bitter losses.
